Sh’martini
From Episode XXXVI: Va'etchanan with Rabbi Lauren Tuchman:
While we do read the 10 commandments in Vaetchanan, there are actually a lot more commandments. We learn in Talmud, in tractate B’rakhot, that Jews are as full of Mitzvot as pomegranates are full of seeds. Pomegranates — and, possibly to a greater extent, pomegranate seeds — represent the commandments.
Now what does this have to do with midrashic mixology? I’ll tell you.
Rabbi, you requested a fruity vodka-based cocktail. Well I heard you — shamati. So please hear me when I introduce this week’s cocktail: The Sh’martini.
The rim of the glass is the gateway to your drink, so place some flavor on that proverbial doorpost in the form of a sugared rim. Wet the rim of a martini glass with a lime wedge and dip into sugar to coat.
In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 oz vodka, ½ oz orange liqueur, ¼ oz lime juice, and 1 oz pomegranate juice. Shake with ice until the shaker gets frosty, and pour into your prepared martini glass.
For a non-alcoholic version, replace the vodka and orange liqueur with 2 ½ oz orange seltzer — just stir, don’t shake. Thou shalt not shake carbonated liquids.
For either version, drop in 10 pomegranate seeds — you might have some extra from last week’s Summary Sunrise — for the 10 commandments, and float a lime wheel on top for the oneness of God above all else.
V’ahavta — And you shall love this drink.
