Garmint Julep

From Episode 218 - T'tzaveh with Rae Antonoff:

We’re going to start by making a mint simple syrup. Take half a cup each water and sugar, mix to dissolve, and bring that to a simmer with 4-5 mint sprigs. Let it simmer for about five minutes and then remove it from the heat to cool before straining and storing in a jar until you’re ready to use it.

For the drink itself, get a rocks glass and add about ¼ cup of your favorite berries for the jewels on the breastplate. Feel free to count out 12 berries if you’re extra like that. Add in 5 mint leaves for all the purification going on, and ½ oz our mint simple syrup, because despite all the gross blood stuff, finally anointing our priests is a pretty sweet occasion.

Now making all of these vestments is going to take some work, so we’re going to muddle all of that together. If you don’t have a muddler, use the handle end of a wooden spoon. We’re not looking for a puree here, just releasing all the oils and juices. Add in some ice, and, in honor of the makers of the priestly garments, 2 oz Makers Mark Bourbon. Alternatively, a lemon iced tea would work nicely for a non-alcoholic drink.

Stir and top with a few berries and a crown of mint leaves.

So put on your finest linens, make yourself a drink, and celebrate T’tzaveh with the Gar-mint Julep. L’chayim!
