Strange Fire
From Episode XXI: Sh’mini with Joe Buchanan:
In the bottom of a rocks glass, muddle an orange wheel and a cherry together with two dashes of bitters and a teaspoon of hot honey. Hot honey can be made at home with many recipes that can be found online, but honestly, just buy a bottle. Top off your muddled ingredients with a splash of club soda, stirring to combine. Add 2oz bourbon of your choice and a few ice cubes, or if you’re fancy, just one of those really big ice cubes. Garnish with a cherry and a grilled orange wheel.
For a non-alcoholic version, many websites suggest that barley tea is a great substitute for bourbon. To be honest, I haven’t tried it, but I can also recommend black tea with a couple of drops of vanilla extract. In either case, use two oz of chilled tea instead of the bourbon and omit the bitters.
Enjoy this drink — an old-fashioned favorite with just a hint of a fiery kick. L’chayim!
