Mai for a Tai

From Episode XV: Mishpatim with Lisa Fierstein:

I don’t know about where you are, but I am recording this episode from Needham, MA, where, much like the rest of the northeast, we’ve just been hit with a lot of snow. It’s cold out and I’ve been day dreaming about warmth and sunshine and the beach, so we’re going to do a summery cocktail today.

So, for Parashat Mishpatim, we bring you, Mai (for a) Tai.

You’re going to start with 1 oz each of a Jamaican rum and a rhum agricole. The Jamaican rum has a bit more depth and complexity while the agricole has a fresher, more vibrant sugar flavor. Add in 0.5 oz each dry curaçao and orgeat syrup. You can buy the orgeat at some liquor stores but there are a ton of videos online of DIY versions. Top that off with ¼ oz simple syrup and 1 oz lime juice. Shake with ice and strain over crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig.

For a non-alcoholic version, the rum and curaçao will be replaced by 2 oz orange juice and 0.5 oz grenadine.

This sweet drink will brighten your day, helping to remind you of the warmth of summer and the sweetness and warmth we should show each other — even the stranger, the orphan, and the widow. So naaseh v’nishmah — let’s make a drink and listen to another story, or another episode of Drinking and Drashing: Torah with a Twist.
