Trypto-fam
From Episode V: Vayetzei with Rabbi Menachem Creditor:
Trypto-fam, a loving mixture of the tryptophan that we’ll be enjoying this week during Thanksgiving and the family that we might see, or from whom we may distance (as did Jacob during the parashat Vayetzei). We wanted to create a cozy fall drink where one could snuggle up, make a pillow out of rocks, and fall fast asleep in order to dream of angels and ladders.
Create a mulled cider by combining half a gallon of apple cider with 1/3 cup of orange juice, 12 whole cloves and 12 allspice berries (for the 12 children born in the Parashah), 3-4 cinnamon sticks, ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and 2 Tbsp of brown sugar (reminding us of Jacob’s desert journey) into a saucepan and turning the heat to medium-high. Once things have heated up a boil, simmer for 20 minutes on low heat. Strain through a fine mesh sieve.
Rim a glass or mug (your choice!) with sugar and then add an amount of your choosing of your choice of bourbon and top with about one cup of your cider mix. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
For the nonalcoholic version, just leave out the bourbon and feel free to serve with whipped cream and a bit of grated nutmeg for an extra special pre-nap treat! L’chayim!
